Our Story: Forty Years of Impact

Change For Equality began in 1985 as a grassroots collective of women in Sydney who refused to accept the status quo. What started as a small, volunteer-led advocacy group has evolved into one of Australia’s most reputable non-profit organisations, dedicated to women’s empowerment and systemic gender reform.

For forty years, we have been at the forefront of major milestones for women in Australia—from lobbying for workplace flexibility to providing frontline support for those escaping domestic violence.

Our Mission

To dismantle the barriers that restrict the potential of women and to build an Australia where gender equality is not just an ideal, but a lived reality for everyone.

Our Vision

A fair, secure, and inclusive nation where all women and girls have the agency to lead, the resources to thrive, and the freedom to define their own futures.

Why We Exist

Although Australia has come a long way, the data indicates that the “fair go” is not yet a reality for everyone:
Change For Equality fills these gaps through a unique combination of immediate crisis response and long-term policy advocacy.
What Sets Us Apart
We aren’t just a service provider; we are a movement. Our approach is built on three core strengths:

1. Locally Rooted, Nationally Minded

With our headquarters in Sydney and digital programs reaching Regional Australia, we understand the unique challenges women face in both the city and the outback.

2. Evidence-Based Advocacy

Our policy recommendations to the Australian Government are backed by rigorous research and real-world data from our frontline programs.

3. A Holistic Ecosystem

We don’t just solve one problem. We support the whole woman—her safety, her financial independence, her career growth, and her mental wellbeing.

Our Leadership & Governance

Change For Equality is governed by a diverse Board of Directors and an executive team with decades of experience in the social impact sector. As a registered charity with the ACNC, we maintain the highest levels of transparency and financial accountability.

“Equality is not a destination, but a constant practice. We are here to ensure that practice becomes the norm in every Australian workplace, home, and community.”

Our Commitment to Inclusion

We recognize that inequality does not affect all women in the same way. We are committed to intersectional feminism, ensuring our programs support First Nations women, women from CALD (Culturally and Linguistically Diverse) backgrounds, the LGBTQIA+ community, and women living with disabilities.

Acknowledgment of Country We acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the lands across Australia and recognize their continuing connection to land, waters, and community. We pay our respects to Elders past and present.
